Abstract
It has been well documented that close others (termed primary groups in the present analysis) do not remain indifferent when someone they feel close to experiences personal changes (Sampson, 1989; Sheriff, 1966). They accept and facilitate some changes (e.g., Hobfoll, 1985; Mermelstein et al., 1986), and attempt to block others (e.g., Fisher & Goff, 1986; Parkes, 1975; Pearce et al., 1981).
