Abstract

Trauma to the arteries supplying the head may result from upper thoracic or neck injuries. Blunt or, more often, penetrating trauma causing acute, external, intrapleural, mediastinal or cervical hemorrhage is an obvious indication for emergency surgery. Some patients, however, have contained hemorrhage with formation of false aneurysm, occlusion of the artery, or an arteriovenous fistula. Such cases require further diagnostic evaluation, which is different for penetratfing and blunt trauma.
