Abstract
In February and March of 1977, the small deep-sea-diving submarine Alvin descended to a depth of 2.6 kilometers along the East Pacific Rise. A research ship had drawn a camera over the area the previous year, confirming the existence of a series of cracks in the ocean floor that appeared to be volcanically active. But the occupants of Alvin saw much more.
