Sandstones, Tectonics, and Continental Evolution

  • Chapter
Sand and Sandstone

Abstract

At some stage in the geological investigation of a sandstone, we need to place the formation in a larger perspective—to see it in relation to the basin fill as a whole and even to think about it in the longer view of geologic history and continental evolution. We need to go from a provincial to a cosmopolitan outlook. Only by placing the local study in a larger framework can we really understand the sandstone in question. Hence in this chapter we consider the larger questions related to sands and sandstones.
