Abstract
The Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Decentralized Hospital Computer Program (DHCP) is one of the richest repositories of clinical information on surgical patients in the world. Full utilization of various DHCP modules allows for the electronic acquisition and storage of more than 80% of the total clinical record of the surgical patient. With the realization of ongoing developmental and the Hybrid Open System Technology (HOST) initiatives, the electronic acquisition of the totality of the surgical patient’s clinical record should become a reality within 2 to 3 years. This chapter describes the electronic information currently available on the surgical patient in the various DHCP modules, how this information is utilized daily in patient management and quality improvement, and the ongoing efforts toward the realization of the complete electronic surgical record.
