Abstract
Magnets were first described by the Romans over 2000 years ago. Over the centuries, as man’s understanding of them has increased, so their applications have developed. In the late 1940s two independent groups of scientists led by Felix Bloch (at Stanford) and Edward Purcell (at Harvard) discovered magnetic resonance in liquids and solids respectively. These discoveries led to them being jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in 1952.
