Abstract

The DRA research Harrier XW175 [67] is a converted T4 Harrier trainer. The front pilot acts as a safety pilot, and the cockpit controls have their conventional functions. The rear pilot acts as a test pilot, and the rear cockpit controls do not have their conventional functionality. Instead they act as demands to an experimental flight control law which in turn sets the nozzle, throttle, tailplane and flap servos. The safety pilot is able to take control from the control law at any time by opposing the motion of the cockpit inceptors which are back-driven from the servos. By restricting the flight envelope such that the safety pilot is always able to regain control, new flight control laws can be very quickly taken into flight.
