Abstract
This is a frequent cystic bone lesion that often gives rise to severe diagnostic problems, radiologically as well as histologically. It is a benign and usually solitary, expansile defect of the vertebrae, the flat bones or the metaphysis of long bones; it consists of a cyst, filled with blood, with an extraosseous part bulging into the soft tissue and producing ill-defined osteolysis. Many osteoclasts within this lesion provoke an osteolysis of malignant appearance. However, aneurysmal bone cyst should be excluded from neoplastic growths because it regresses after incomplete removal. Features of this lesion are frequently encountered in various true benign and malignant bone tumors. The etiology remains unknown; probably the lesion represents a special type of bone reaction after local damage.
