Abstract
The proposal that the United Kingdom needs a national food and nutrition policy is one which commands considerable public and press support (see, for example, Cannon [9]). The debate on this need has tended to be treated as purely a matter of public health policy, with the quality of the evidence for diet/disease relationships being the only touchstone for making a decision. The nature of these relationships, and the quality of the scientific evidence pertaining to them, has been discussed by the other authors in this book. There is no need to reiterate them here. Instead I shall confine myself to exploring more generally some of the other issues involved in moving from nutrition science to policy.
