Abstract
A World Health Organisation Study Group [1] has recently proposed a simple classification of diabetes mellitus into three principal groups (Table 3.1) which differ in their clinical, epidemiological and aetiological features. While this classification must be regarded as provisional, given the remaining uncertainties concerning aetiology, it will be used as the basis for the following discussion. Furthermore, the symposium topic, the balanced diet, will be discussed under two headings: aetiology and treatment respectively.
