An Interactive Guide Through a Defined Modelling Process

Abstract

We address the problem of getting started in using a yet unfamiliar CASE (computer-aided software engineering) tool in a purposeful way. We propose a solution based upon a defined modelling process of a method that is to be supported by the tool in question. This process defines in a systematic way how to model functional requirements, scenarios and goals as well as their relations. An explicit representation of this process enables an interactive process guide integrated in the tool to instruct and support the user while already working on real problems. This automated guide proposes primary tasks (according to the method) to be performed by the user. In addition, it supports the user performing them as well as all the secondary tasks involved. For example, if any instruction cannot be understood and executed, the users can let the guide execute this instruction on their behalf. We describe this interactive guide for getting started in using a CASE tool for requirements engineering according to a defined modelling process, and evaluate its implementation.
