Abstract
Readers of abacus undoubtedly are expecting early coverage of the Fifth Generation—as was, indeed, predicted in my preceding editorial (Fall 1983). But I had not anticipated that there would be so much so fast. The coverage of MCC (Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation) — a reaction of the Fifth Generation — in the Washington report of the previous issue and the extensive coverage in the book reviews section of the present issue were initiated by the editors of those departments. I’m pleased that this gives me an excuse to make some observations on the Fifth Generation and related matters here.
