Abstract
This article presents properties of the Earth’s magnetic field and its impact on the commercial flight navigation. Scientific studies of the Earth’s magnetic field in Slovenia during the last thirty years are presented. This paper deals with theoretical research regarding the magnetopause that protects life on Earth from lethal radiation from space. Changes in the Earth’s magnetic field have been measured and are presented. The magnetic compass, which operates uses the Earth's magnetic field, is the oldest navigation instrument. Through centuries it has been the most important aid to navigation on the sea, helping seafarers to steer the right courses. Other physical measurements are not as easy or reliable as measurements by magnetic compass. Today, the magnetic compass is still the basic navigation instrument on ships and aircraft. It is used in exceptional cases when radio navigation systems do not operate reliably.
