Abstract

The admission of socialist Vietnam to a capitalist organization in Southeast Asia, ASEAN, in July 1995, dramatically shows the changes that have taken place in Asia. Similarly, it shows a different course of development compared with the European experience after the collapse of the socialist world system. In Europe, the socialist and Marxist-Leninist state systems collapsed and a change over to the capitalist and pluralistic democratic system began. In the Far East, however, both the former Soviet allies and other Marxist states have continued their political rule and state ideology, although most of them have made remarkable changes in their economic system and foreign-policy orientation.
