Abstract
The progressive developments in digital electronics and digital computing since the 1960s have resulted in the conversion from analogue to digital technology of devices for storing and processing audio signals. Many modem tape-recorders and disk-players use digital rather than analogue techniques. Digital transmission of speech is being used to an increasingly large extent on the Public Services Telephone Network (PSTN), and telecommunication systems, in general, are increasingly becoming digital in nature. Most signal processing operations are now carried out using digital computers or special-purpose digital signal processing (DSP) devices.
