Abstract
Burns included a selection of epitaphs and epigrams at the end of the Kilmarnock Edition, demonstrating his talent for adroit rhyming as well as his sense of humour. Often these poems consist of one or two quatrains. ‘Epitaph on a Henpecked Country Squire’ (96/CW, 209) and ‘Epigram on Said Occasion’ (97 /CW, 209) were written about a couple Burns had observed around Mauchline: William Campbell (d.1786) who lived at Netherplace, a mansion near Mauchline; and his wife Lilias Neilson (d.1826), daughter of a Glasgow merchant.
