Abstract

The political instability and fierce social tensions that were evident on the Italian peninsula in the early 19th century contrasted with the apparent tranquillity that had prevailed for much of the previous century. Indeed, as the final quarter of the 18th century opened, the Italian states seemed to many observers to be on the way to recovery from the political and economic disasters that had followed the glories of the Renaissance, and after more than two centuries of foreign domination, political fragmentation and economic decline once more seemed to be enjoying a new degree of autonomy and showing new signs of political and economic development.
