Solubility and Solution Behaviour of Chitin and Chitosan

  • Chapter
Chitin Chemistry

Abstract

Chitin is a relatively intractable polymer and despite its structural similarity to cellulose it is insoluble in typical cellulose solvents such as cuprammonium hydroxide (Schweizer’s reagent), cupriethylene diamine and Cadoxen. However there are a limited number of solvent systems which may be grouped together in three classes.
