Abstract
The findings revealed in this study suggest that the introduction of an IMF stand-by arrangement does not appear significantly to increase or promote political instability in those countries which have solicited the Fund for high-conditionality balance of payments assistance. Any apparent association between these two variables is likely to be explained by the simultaneous existence of a variety of long-term structural economic problems, which, in and of themselves, tend to induce political instability. These findings were revealed through the rigorous comparison and analysis of relevant cross-national and pooled data.
