Abstract
A large part of the defence thinking that has occurred during the first nine months of the new Reagan Administration has focused on what to do about America’s strategic posture. Just two weeks ago, the President announced a sweeping set of proposals in regard to the US strategic forces which could fairly be called the most comprehensive and important set of strategic announcements ever seen at one time. This was largely the consequence of the fact that most of the current strategic forces were acquired in the late 1950s or early 1960s. As strategic forces seem to last about 20 years or so, they are all now starting to wear out. It is, therefore, time to do something about each of the three legs of the triad.
