Abstract
The ten days following the internment of ‘B’ category men saw the rapid deterioration of the military situation. German forces swept through Belgium and advanced rapidly into France. On 27 May Belgium surrendered. The same day, the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force, trapped in the small French port of Dunkirk by encircling German units, began. In Britain it seemed that the anticipated German invasion could only be weeks away.
