This case study of WINGS (Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support) and WINGS-CF (Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support for Community Foundations) is not primarily about global philanthropy as cross-border giving; rather it relates to the globalization of philanthropy defined as the process of spreading philanthropic institutions and practices globally. Although these two meanings of ‘global philanthropy’ are analytically distinguishable they are related in practice insofar as the globalization of philanthropy, as defined above, is a necessary accompaniment, if not condition for, the growth of cross-border giving i.e. global philanthropy.
