Abstract
DCE (Dynamic Critic Expert) is an intelligent tutoring and advisory system based on a special designed dialog model. It supports explorative learning and problem solving within a flexible simulation environment. DCE offers different tutoring strategies and therefore provides a better transparency than traditional help and explanation systems do.
Based on this model, the control of the learner's activities is taken over by our Dynamic Critic Expert Model (DCEM). The explorative learning environment acts like a coach and provides critique based explanations about correct and false parts of the solution. Errors are corrected by the expert component. In addition, we have extended some traditional navigation facilities to focus the learning information and to integrate different types of learning information in a consistent way.
We have mapped the functionality of DCEM to a prototype architecture based on the conceptual model of a blackboard. The knowledge based learning system is applied in the context of risk adapted therapy planning and control in pediatric oncology. The paper describes the tutoring strategies, the DCEM constraint, and the architecure of the DCE system. This report is rounded off by some remarks about other applications.
