Morphological processing in the two-level paradigm

Abstract

This article describes the architecture of LILOG/2LM, a development tool for two-level morphological descriptions. One of the predominant characteristics of this architecture is the modularization of the lexicon into three components: a morph lexicon containing morphologically relevant information, a base lexicon containing syntactically and semantically relevant information, and a layer of lexical rules which — depending on the outcome of morphological analysis — produce a syntactic and semantic description of the analyzed word form. To illustrate the individual components of LILOG/2LM examples of a two-level account of German inflectional morphology are provided. In addition, the algorithms performing recognition and production of word forms are outlined with respect to a sample of lexical entries and morphological rules.
