Abstract

A knowledge based system, called the TELLER SIMULATOR, able to solve simple arithmetical problems, is herein presented. This system has been developed with an educational purpose, and is intended to be used with primary/secondary school children. The description of the system is aimed at analysing the kinds of knowledge and solution techniques which must be employed by an automatic problem solver, oriented to the arithmetic domain, in order to make it a tool apt to be used in order to improve the learning of arithmetic concepts.
