Bei der Frage nach einer spezifischen Identität der Europäischen Union (EU) und ihrem Stellenwert in der Konstruktion und Rechtfertigung politischer Entscheidungen treffen politisches und politikwissenschaftliches Interesse aufeinander – besonders dann, wenn es um die gemeinsame Sicherheitspolitik ihrer Mitgliedstaaten geht. In einer pragmatistisch geprägten Grounded-Theory-Studie zeigt Gesa Panetta Identität als einen von mehreren Wegen, die besondere Gestalt der EU-Sicherheitspolitik greifbar zu machen. Deutlich wird dies im rekonstruierten Modell der „Stabilisierungsarbeit“. Das breit angelegte Modell zeigt dabei eine klare Differenz zwischen dem auf, was als Identität der EU-Sicherheitspolitik kommuniziert wird, und dem, was sich empirisch als Kern gemeinsamen Handelns ergibt.
