Abstract
The characteristics of solitary waves of electric breakdown in gases are considered for the purpose of their use in experimental diagnostics. From an analysis of the experimental results on breakdown initiation by a long laser spark, it is concluded that these waves are the breathers of the sine-Gordon equation. The qualitative model for the description of other waves of electric breakdown is outlined on the basis of this conclusion. Further experiments are proposed for verification of this model.
