Abstract
A self‐similar description of electron and phonon kinetics in metals is proposed for the case of a sharp gradient of the electron temperature. A nonequilibrium distribution of the phonon number density peaked near the plasma frequency of ions and extended along the heat‐flow axis is found. It is shown that Cherenkov generation of nonequilibrium phonons causes suppression of the electron heat flow followed by rapid disintegration of the metal lattice.
