Abstract
The production of xylitol by the yeast Candida guilliermondii was investigated in batch fermentations with aspenwood hemicellulose hydrolysate and compared with results obtained in semi-defined media with a mixture of glucose and xylose. The hemicellulose hydrolysate had to be supplemented by yeast extract and the maximum xylitol yield (0.8 g g−1) and productivity (0.6 g l−1 h−1) were reached by controlling oxygen input.
