Samenvatting
Verslaving is sinds mensenheugenis een omvangrijk probleem in bijna alle samenlevingen.1 Nieuw is alleen de medicalisering van het probleem, waarbij verslaving als een stoornis of een ziekte wordt gezien. Het behandelaanbod aan de groep patiënten met een verslaving kan echter nog sterk verbeterd worden.2 Om zover te komen, is het van belang dat we proberen te begrijpen wat het onderliggende neurobiologische mechanisme van verslaving is. Hoe eerder we kunnen ingrijpen in de cascade van ontregelingen die samenhangen met verslaving, hoe groter de kans is dat onze behandelingen effectiever worden.3
Dit artikel beoogt een overzicht te geven van verschillende aspecten van verslaving. Eerst worden de klinische verschijnselen en de diagnostiek besproken. Daarna wordt ingegaan op de neuropsychologische stoornissen die er bij op kunnen treden. Tot slot worden de neurobiologische mechanismen beschreven die ten grondslag kunnen liggen aan het verslavingsproces.
