Abstract.
The performance of a beam splitter based on the atomic Kapitza–Dirac effect can be essentially improved by concentrating the atoms close to the periodically spaced, approximately linear sections of the optical potential. This can be easily achieved with a second, identical phase grating, which plays the role of an atomic array illuminator.
