Abstract

The spacing of the dendrite arms has been measured in a large group of nonferrous alloys cast under comparable conditions, from which it has been learned that:

  1. 1.

The dendrite arm spacing and the grain size are independent.

  2. 2.

The dendrite spacing is inversely proportional to the rate of freezing.

  3. 3.

    Alloying coarsens the dendrite.

  4. 4.

The dendrite spacing in any one alloy system varies in the same manner as the ratio of the heat of fusion to the thermal diffusivity.
