Abstract
The overview of the sociological theories about professions is completed by the following article that presents the so-called power approach. It can be viewed primarily as a criticism of the structural theoretical approach and introduces ‘power’ as an essential category in the process of professionalization. Crucial in this context are the autonomy and the monopoly to a certain sector that professions achieve with the help of the state. For the representatives of the power approach the justification for the special privileges cannot be a selfless orientation towards the common good. This argument is rather pretextual.
