Abstract
As the production of oil is steadily heading towards its peak and will start to fall when this point has been reached, one vital question arises: What will be the future fuel for cars? It is most probable that petroleum will not be replaced by a single fuel but by several candidates. Fuel is likely to diversify and, as a consequence, there will also be a diversification in engine and powertrain technology. The automotive industry cannot focus on one technology alone.
