Abstract
The author has reported in two recent papers1,2 that whereas the primary photocurrent of a selenium rectifier exposed to the effect of mercury vapour remains practically unchanged the self-resistance and with it the e. m. f. gradually decrease. Closer investigation shows that the colour sensitivity curve is at the same time shifted far into the infrared and a new maximum appears at about 1000 mμ, which in accordance with data found in the literature can be ascribed to the formation of a HgSe layer (seeP. Görlich, Die lichtelektrischen Zellen, Leipzig, 1951. p. 271). The infrared sensitivity (measured with the light of an incandescent lamp and a CS2-J solution as an infrared filter) amounts to 10–18 percent of the total sensitivity.
Phys. Soc. B. 65 (1952), 552.]
