Abstract
A critical analysis of the arteriallalveolar oxygen tension ratio (a/APO2) is presented by rearranging the terms of the pulmonary shunt equation. The influence of the shunt and inspired oxygen concentration on a/APO2 are illustrated. It is shown that, despite reports to the contrary, a/APO2 varies with FiO2, particularly at high shunt levels.
