Summary
EUS FNA is a sensitive and accurate technique for establishing a tissue diagnosis for periluminal lesions (e.g. lymph nodes) when other techniques have failed or are not possible. The safety of the technique centers on employing a linear scanning echoprobe with a small gauge needle to biopsy solid lesions. The major limitation in the widespread application of EUS FNA has been the expense associated with the equipment and a shortage of individuals trained in performing the procedure. However, EUS FNA is being introduced in the preoperative staging algorithm of different tumors (esophagus, lung, etc).
