Abstract
The basic pattern of placodont dermal armor is that of a mosaic of hexagonal osteoderms and horny scutes. Through their various modifications, they can combine to form flexible regions, such as the plastron, very rigid ones, such as the carapace, or hydrodynamically designed structures, such as the keels. Early in ontogeny and probably phylogeny as well, the plates do not contact one another. The great variety in shape of both individual plates and the armor itself is similar to that seen in epithecal turtle shells; in each case the dermal armor is almost entirely independent of the internal skeleton.
