Detection and prevention of colon cancer by rectosigmoidoscopy

  • Published:
Acta Endoscopica

Summary

The tumoral lesions of the colon, adenomas and cancers are predominant in the lower part of the intestinal tract (rectum and sigmoid). The rectosigmoidoscopy is an efficient examination in the detection of colic lesions when performed with a fibrorectosigmoidoscope which explores an average field of 50 cm. 70% of the tumoral colic lesions are accessible to this instrument. In 566 examinations realised with the TCF I S OLYMPUS, we have detected 191 tumoral lesions (153 adenomas and 38 cancers). Among these lesions, 39 were located between 0 and 14 cm of the rectum, 60 between 15 and 24 cm and 92 between 25 and 60 cm. The endoscopic resection of adenomas ensures an efficient prevention of colic cancer in the segment examined. The fibrorectosigmoidoscopy is a quick examination, well tolerated by the patient which does not require any long preparation, contrary to the complete exploration methods for the colon (the barium enema with air contrast and the conventional endoscopy). It represents with the HEMOCCULT test an important progress in the detection and the prevention of colic cancer.
