Summary
The bipolar electrocoagulation tumor probe was employed for palliation of obstructing esophageal and rectal carcinoma in 19 and 17 patients respectively.
In the esophageal carcinoma group, 13 patients had one session and 6 two. This resulted in a good to moderate functional short term success in 18 patients with only one major complication in one patient (delayed hemorrhage). In the rectal carcinoma group, more initial sessions were needed (2 sessions in 9 patients and one patient with 4 sessions). A good to moderate functional result was obtained in 15 patients. Two patients suffered a major complication: delayed hemorrhage in one and perforation in another.
It is concluded that the BICAP tumor probe provides an easy, cheap and effective alternative to laser or surgery for palliation of malignant esophageal or rectal obstruction in selected patients.
