Comparison of the Atkinson Tube and ACMI tumour probe for palliation of malignant oesophageal strictures

Summary

The use of the Atkinson tube and BICAP tumor were compared for palliation of malignant oesophageal strictures with respect to the effects on dysphagia, the type of diet consumed, and the risk of complications.

A single treatment with the bipolar probe improved dysphagia in most patients, but usually had to be repeated. There was no difference in improvement between the two methods as judged by dysphagia scores. The risk of complication with the ACMI instrument is low.

The tumour probe and Atkinson tube give comparable palliation and appear complementary.
