Summary

Application of dyes during oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy either realises a vital staining if absorbed by the mucosa, or gives contrast changes to the normal mucosal, redness.

Stains usually used are Lugol's solution, Methylene Blue and Toluidine Blue. The use of stains during the endoscopy is simple, and possible, in routine procedure, by direct application of dyes under visual control. Methylene Blue is remarquably interesting in the diagnosis and follow up of linear ulcers, and Lugol's solution in the study of dysplasia andin situ carcinoma of the esophagus. The authors discuss the practical indications and perspectives of the dye scattering method in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
