Complication of pharyngeal anaesthesia with tetracaïne — Report of reversible complication

  • Published:
Acta Endoscopica

Summary

Topical anaesthesia of the pharynx before upper digestive endoscopy is usually performed by most of the endoscopists in order to improve the comfort and the quality of the examination.

This practice is generally regarded as free from any danger.

We report a case of reversible complication after topical administration of tetracaine and we emphasize the main symptoms of the side-effects, the risk factors as well as the preventive and therapeutic measures to be recommended.
