Summary
Interleukin-1β is a cytokine that is implicated in many inflammatory processes. Recently, early induction of interleukin-1β has been demonstrated in several animal models of ulcerative colitis. We have now investigated expression of the interleukin-1β gene in biopsy specimens obtained from ulcerative colitis patients and controls, using a DNA-amplification technique. Our results indicate that in ulcerative colitis mucosal levels of interleukine-β are increased.
