Summary
A model of harmonic oscillators for molecular rearrangement collisions is proposed. In this model the reaction occurs through the formation of an unstable activated complex. In this complex there is a normal mode with negative frequency. Using theR_matrix theory of Wigner and Eisenbud, a numerical example is calculated. The results show that the sometimes very low steric factors in chemical kinetics may be explained by this model.
