Abstract
The idea of Einstein about the possibility of stimulated emission of light under interaction of radiation and matter (a two-photon process) is extended to nonlinear Raman scattering (a four-photon process). A theory of coherent stimulated Raman scattering is developed. Based on this theory, stimulated Raman scatering and resonance Raman scattering are treated as particular cases of nonlinear Raman scattering. The theory and experiment are compared in relation to such complicated issues as asymmetry of the scattering indivatrix, the effects of replication, the rings in Raman-scattering emission, and also the shift of the excitation contour and the sequences of Stokes components of higher order in resonance Raman scattering. On the basis of the theory developed, without invoking any additional assumptions, the phenomena of phase conjugation in stimulated Raman scattering, solitions in stimulated Raman scattering, and giant Raman scattering are considered.
