Summary
A laboratory study of predation by coccinellid larvae (Col. Coccinellidae) on cassava mealybugPhenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Hom. Pseudococcidae) populations was made with an indigenous speciesExochomus flaviventris Mader and an exotic one,Hyperaspis raynevali Mulsant, in relation with the density and age structure of the prey population, and with the prey/predator ratio.
Predation of coccinellid larvae was especially influenced by the density and age structure of the prey population ofP. manihoti; the prey/predator ratio interfered less.
It was more important on a density of 45 mealybugs per stem than on 25 mealybugs per stem and resulted in a significant limitation in the growth of cassava mealybug population including adults and crawlers, and in a significant reduction in the mean densities of the pest population with second and third instars.
For both species of coccinellids, releases with prey/predator ratio of 3/1 were more efficient than the 7/1 ones. However, this result was more pronounced withE. flaviventris.
For all the parameters studied, the exotic coccinellidH. raynevali heldP. manihoti densities at numerical levels below those achieved by the indigenous one,E. flaviventris.
Results were compared to those obtained in a field study in Congo. The use of coccinellids larvae in the biological control of Cassava Mealybug was discussed.
