Summary
As in the main anatomical objections have been made against the possibility of multiple mating, it seemed necessary to re-examine the intake of sperma in the oviducts and into the spermatheca, multiple insemination under natural conditions having been proved by means of genetic tests. A number of queens were fixed immediately or 2 to 24 hours after mating and studied by dissection and histological sections.
It is shown that the coagulating mucus never extends farther than to the vaginal orifice and that it is extruded together with the mating sign a short time after the copula. The spermatozoa, owing to a characteristic reaction, have the tendency to arrange themselves parallelwise, for example also within the copula of the median oviduct near the origin of the spermathecal duct. Through the narrow passage however the sperma is pressed passively into the spermatheca. The importance of the valve fold and of the very vigorously developed musculature in regard to this process is discussed. The observation of a pathological case where the sperma failed to reach the spermatheca might contribute to the evidence for this interpretation.
The time which is needed to eliminate the sperma taken up into the oviducts during the one mating flight varies considerably between one queen and another; but it is without importance as to the possibility of further matings. 5 hours after mating the oviducts may contain considerable masses of sperma. 24 hours later generally they are emptied of sperma.
