Abstract
An extensive set of direct eddy flux measurements over the ocean in conditions of strong cold air advection during AMTEX ’75 yield surface-layer sensible heat-transfer coefficients which, like the drag coefficients but unlike latent heat-transfer coefficients, correlate positively and significantly with mean wind speed. No satisfactory explanation for this behaviour emerges from a search for possible systematic errors in instruments, or due to sampling or coral reef effects. The results are not in strong conflict with previous field measurements. However, to explain the differences between sensible and latent heat transfer coefficients, a subtle contamination of four independent heat flux measurements, or a preferential enhancement of sensible heat flux (e.g., in conditions of spray) is required.
