Summary
The flagella ofS. bioreti and their distally directed transverse waves are described in detail by direct observations and microphotographs in phase contrast. Flagellum I beats with big meander- or S-like arcs. After damage it becomes helix-shaped with various small pitches. Short flagella which grew out of the kinetosomes show rotations. Flagellum II shows helical waves and a much smaller rate in the wave movement.
The big planar arcs are supposed as the resultant of two superhelices wound in oppositedirections (see the model in Figs. 22 and 23). Their location in the flagellum may be the two central fibrils. The flagellar beat is not interpreted by contractions but by rotations of the flagellar fibrils. This model explains the uniplanar and helical waves depending on the coiling sense of the superhelices (see Fig. 24). Moreover it explains the different wavelengths and pitches, the S-like bending of the flagellum, the independence of waves in the same flagellum, the pulsatory beat and the active transport along the flagellum.
